Venous Leg Ulcers
Understanding Venous Leg Ulcers
Venous leg ulcers develop when the veins in your legs are unable to return blood effectively to the heart, causing blood to pool and pressure to build in the lower limbs. This chronic venous insufficiency weakens the skin and underlying tissue, leading to open, often weeping sores usually around the ankles or lower legs. These ulcers tend to recur, are slow to heal and may become infected if not properly managed.
Why Treatment Matters
Left untreated, venous ulcers can become chronic, severely impact mobility and significantly increase the risk of infection and hospitalization. They often cause swelling, pain and skin discoloration. Early and consistent wound care improves healing outcomes, reduces discomfort and helps prevent long-term damage or complications like cellulitis and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
